In the two hundred years he had guarded the field, Flint had seen many things. Much happy toil and laughter in the summer days and a great merrymaking at harvest times. He had watched the lovers passing by on their spring walks and heard the children going home in the evening, calling to him from the lane. He knew well the good people who worked the land and knew also the many creatures that roamed in the woods and fields close by. And so it was for many years.
Then one day the farm was sold, and a new master came to live in the old house. He was a cruel man who beat his dogs and ill used those who worked for him. He thought only of profit and pleasure and cared nothing for the life of the countryside. Soon more men appeared and the sound of gunfire was heard and the smell of blood was in the air.
Flint grew to hate the man so much that one day he killed him. Out with his dogs one afternoon the farmer stopped near Flint to load his gun. A heron was flying overhead and as the gun was raised to the sky Flint stretched out his arm and snapped the man's neck like a dry twig. The dogs bolted down the hill, howling with terror.
The brother inherited the farm, and being a kindly man, peace was restored to the land. But Flint never forgot the power that had awakened in him. Other men have crossed Flint's path since that day. Some never returned home. | Flint T Shirt £14.99 | | Flint Print £29.95 |
