Jonah

Custodian of sacred and holy places. Guardian of ancient secrets. Moves silently through the night, returns before dawn to sleep.

Long ago, before the great stones were set in the earth to speak its mysteries, Jonah tended the shrines of his ancestors and fashioned beautiful figures in the likeness of his Gods.

His people were simple farmers and lived peacefully along the shores of the great river, never straying from the fertile valley they had settled many generations ago.

But their contentment was not to last. One winter morning their world was torn apart. Great explosions shook the earth. Boiling lava and hot choking ash raced down from the mountain and consumed everything in its path. Many perished.

A few days later those who had escaped returned and wept for their dead. They found Jonah kneeling beneath a rock. Though most of his flesh had burned away he still held in his outstretched hand a small stone figure. He had carried it with him all his life.

With great ceremony and in utter silence they covered him with earth and stones, and left him there with his Gods... but his Gods did not leave him there forever.
